Family Fondue Night For Valentine’s Day

I don’t remember how old the kids were when we first started this tradition, but for the last few years, we’ve looked forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day together with a fancy fondue night. (Or, as Huck and Marleigh like to call it, “Fun-due” night!)

Call us crazy, but we actually love spending quality time with our kids and usually choose family time over a fancy date night out. Our annual Valentine’s dinner date in is something we all look forward to once the calendar flips to February. And as an added bonus, with so many options on the table, fondue night is one of the only nights of the year where the kids have some form of ownership over what they decide to eat!

Here’s how we prep for our fancy family dinner.

The week leading up to Valentine’s Day, I make a trip to the grocery store for the dessert essentials – rice krispy treats, brownies, marshmallows, chocolate chip cookies, and lots of fresh fruit (bananas, apples, strawberries, oranges, and anything else that’s easily dippable).

The day of, I stop at the store again in the afternoon for our meats, dodging all the husbands shopping for last-minute grocery store bouquets 😉 I usually opt for chicken breasts and a steak or steak strips, along with some small potatoes. These will all be cooked in vegetable oil in the fondue pot.

As far as the details go, we keep it simple. Ketchup, sweet & sour sauce, steak sauce, and a little bit of BBQ to accompany the meats and potatoes, and nothing but chocolate for the dessert round!

Here is a great recipe to use for chocolate fondue. You can get creative with it – it’s virtually fail-proof! We usually like to throw in a little bit of “Wow Butter” (peanut butter, for those of you who aren’t plagued by peanut allergies) for a little extra flavor. If you’re looking for a lighter meal or not into eating meat, we’ve also tried cheese fondue in the past with fresh breads and vegetables to dip, which was delicious!

Our Cuisinart fondue set, which we got as a wedding gift, has treated us well over the years – but you can find fondue sets at most stores that sell kitchen/cooking items. Which means there’s still time to go and grab one for your family Valentine’s festivities tomorrow!

How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day with your loved ones?
