In case you don’t follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you might not know that we recently added a new furry camper to our clan! Zeke “Cozy Puppy” Gill was born on my birthday (10/12) and joined our family in December. He has brought a whole new level of cuteness and crazy to our lives, and we couldn’t love him more if we tried! Aside from the occasional “puppy fit,” Zeke is the calmest puppy I’ve ever seen. He loves nothing more than to snuggle up and snooze – always finding the coziest spots in the house, even if it means stealing our blankets off the sofa to make himself a bed.
He is also super smart and knows his “sit,” “wait,” “leave it,” and “come” commands surprisingly well. We start puppy school with him next week and I can’t wait to see what other tricks he masters!
While life with a puppy has been relatively easy thus far (aside from the first few sleepless weeks), there have been a couple things that have helped ease the transition. If you’re thinking about getting a puppy and need ideas of what to bring home with them, here are a few of our favorites:
- Toys, toys, and more toys. Before we brought Zeke home, we stocked up on puppy toys of every variety. A few ropes, some stuffed animals, a squeaky toy or two, and chew toys have all come in handy to keep Zekey occupied! We have a Tupperware container full of toys and bring a couple out at a time so he isn’t overwhelmed – then switch them out when it seems like he’s getting bored with his selections.
- Carpet spray and paper towels. Let’s face it – puppies pee. A LOT. Potty training a dog isn’t the easiest task, especially in the dead of winter when their little paws do not like being covered in snow! Zeke has been pretty good about potty training thus far, but accidents happen. Odor-eliminating carpet spray and buying paper towels in bulk have helped with easy clean-up!
- Treats to reward good behavior. Similar to the toys, we have a few different varieties of treats to give Zeke depending on the situation. For teaching him his basic commands, we used training treats (tiny, one-bite treats that are quick for him to eat and give instant gratification). For every-day rewards, like when he’s hanging out being a good boy or looking extra cute (which is often), we use bigger treats that he can enjoy a little longer.
Lately, Zeke has been loving his all natural treats that the team at Sweet P’s Barkery sent to us to try out, and I’m excited to offer my fellow puppy lovers a giveaway and promo code to give them to your own pooch at home! The Sweet Potato PupKin Treats they sent us are made of healthy ingredients (sweet potato, coconut oil, brown rice flour, oats, and cinnamon) and Zeke has been gobbling them up!
